Six more games were completed this week. Seven remain (all involve Kevin LaMar).

Toffs 11 September 2001 Memorial Tournament begins

Our second tournament has started. Officially, the name is "Toffs 11 September 2001 Memorial Tournament," but informally it may be called "9/11 Tournament" or similar. The participants are

Kevin LaMar,
Jeffrey Campbell,
Henrico Saeran (our newest member),
Justin Lewis, and
Alyanna Lanikova.

Everyone will play the other four players as both white and black. I feel that everyone involved has a realistic chance at winning, and so this tourney should be quite interesting. Good luck.

The Orangutang Game ends

16.e4 {Ok, this game is not exciting anymore. I have no attack. Playing as black against a computer isn't fun. I ran the rest of the game through a better computer, and (a) white goes up a pawn, (b) the pawn does not get promoted, therefore (c) the game is a draw.} 1/2-1/2 {draw accepted}

I think this exercise made me a better player. The last game I finished was my best game ever.

Meanwhile, we are planning for our next tournament. That will bring back some excitement.

The Orangutang Game, moves 14–15

Let's resume the game.

14.Nxa5 {As expected, white captures before I can move it to c7.}
14...Rxa5 {Forced. Any other move is a horrible mistake.}
15.Ba3! {I was somewhat expecting this move, but I didn't want to see it. The bishop threatens my knight on e7. Perhaps I should have castled earlier. My problem is that my queen is protecting both that knight and my a-rook. Therefore, my choices are (a) move the knight, (b) block the white bishop, or (c) move the rook.}
15...Ra8 {This move took some time to figure out. I thought about Nc8, c5, Ra6, and Ra8. Nc8 allows the white bishop to prevent my castling indefinitely. I considered c5 for a while, but I believe it fails because of the reply 16.Qb6. Ra6 pins my b-pawn and could force my bishop out of the fianchetto. Therefore, I decided on Ra8. Now, 16.Bxe7 looks like a bad move for white, because my queen could capture the bishop and then threaten white's pawn.}
